Division 3: Highfield A V Silver Springs & U.C.C. V Highfield B, November 13th 2014
Thursday November 13th 2014, Silver Springs travelled to Highfield A while U.C.C. hosted Highfield B, and Kilbrin had a bye.
Highfield A took on Silver Springs on their home-turf and were hoping to pull themselves back into contention against the leading team in the table.
First up Olan and Dave took centre-court, and gave a tenacious display where neither player would give an inch. The match went to 5 games and Dave just nicked the win to give Silver Springs the early lead.
Next up were Eoghan and Jan. Jan took the first game despite a late come-back effort from Eoghan. Eoghan resumed his good form from the end of that game and went on to win the next game to tie the match at 1-all. Both players had to dig deep in their energy reserves after that and pushed themselves through the pain barrier as many long punishing rallies proceeded.
After a tough 3rd game that Jan clinched, the 4th game went his way and he pulled away to win the final game with a decisive margin.
So, at 2 matches up Silver Springs were in the driving seat as Sophie and Vincent took to the court.
Sophie opened well and took the first game. Vincent battled well after that but Sophie proved too accurate and showed that great retrieving skills run in the family as she held on for the win.
Last up were Eoghan and Mark. Mark took an early lead and looked in a great position at 14-10 but Eoghan showed great determination and managed to claw himself back to 14-all and to win a last tough rally to take the first game.
There was nothing between the players but Eoghan managed to take the match for Silver Springs, and thus 3 valuable winning bonus points to add to their tally.
The results from the matches were:
Highfield A 6 – 13 Silver Springs
Eoghan Long 1 – 3 Jan Mikolaj
Sophie O’Rourke 3 – 1 Vincent Daly
Olan Lenane 2 – 3 Dave O’Riordan
Mark Murphy 0 – 3 Eoghan Barry
UCC were too strong for Highfield B down in the Mardyke. UCC started well with Gavin Bock claiming a hard fought 3-1 win against Tim O’Callaghan. Next up at #1 Brendan Lawton played out another tight 3-1 win for the students against Nick Griffith.
At #2 Eoghan Meaney stretched UCC’s lead with a 3-0 win against Tony Cronnelly, in a match that was closer than the scoreline suggested. Finally at #3 Aidan Daly completed the clean sweep overcoming Highfields Fergal O’Connor in straight games. Full points for the students giving them a 16-2 win on the night.
The results from the matches were:
U.C.C. 16- 2 Highfield B
Brendan Lawton 3 – 1 Nick Griffith
Eoghan Meaney 3 – 0 Tony Cronnelly
Aidan Daly 3 – 0 Fergal O’Connor
Gavin Bock 3 – 1 Tim O’Callaghan
