In Cork, Highfield played host to their near neighbours Sunday’s Well who were top of the table coming into the fixture.
The matches were all well fought and with the teams poised at 2 matches apiece, the final match was set to be a tense affair.
The healthy turnout of spectators from both clubs ensured that the final match between Jaime and Kevin was regarded with a buzz in the atmosphere. The players didn’t disappoint and delivered what turned out to be a tremendous battle that thrilled the audience in a climactic “5-setter”. Unquestionably the match of the night, it saw great displays from both players of courage and resilience. Kevin took the initiative and worked himself into a terrific position with a 2-1 lead going into the 4th game. He gave an exhibition of volleys, taking the ball early at every opportunity, and sending it to good length to either side and also produced some wonderful touch drop-shots which got him to match ball in that game. Where others may have found the match beyond recovery at 2 match-balls down in the 4th game, the current Munster Champion rallied and dug deep and showed his mettle to come back and take the match in the 5th game. Undoubtedly the fixture will live long in the memories of the spectators that lined the gallery and the ground-floor viewing area of the centre court on the night.
