Cork teenager selected on Irish Senior Womens Squash Team

Fifteen year old Sophie O’Rourke who attends Mount Mercy College was recently selected on the Irish Senior Womens Team which competed at the 2016 European Team Championships in Warsaw, Poland. This was a remarkable achievement for the young squash player from the Highfield Club in Cork and follows on from her dominance of the Irish Junior squash scene in recent years.

Coached by her father Kevin and ably assisted by Irish veteran Martin McDonnell, Sophie is a three-time national champion.and has remained unbeaten in her age category over the last 2 years.

 

This year Sophie entered the Senior Nationals for the first time and had a superb tournament finishing in 3rd place. Irish Squash then invited Sophie to compete in the qualifying round of the Irish Open which is a professional tournament.

It’s a big step up to Senior Squash but Sophie has met the challenge head on making her senior debut at the Europeans in Warsaw in early May. At this event Sophie had a thrilling 3/2 win in her match v Belgium.
The future indeed looks bright for the rising star of Irish Squash.
