Munster Select vs Silver Springs
Silversprings hosted the Munster Select team this week in the Division 2. A relatively comfortable win in their first encounter had the home team confident. Silversprings expected to be too strong for their opponents but immediately things got off to a rocky start.
At number 3 Ian Mannix from Limerick Lawn Tennis club raced into the lead against Silversprings’ Graham Higgins winning the first game comfortably. Graham recovered well to take a tight second but was under pressure again in the third. He just about came through 12-10 in that game to lead 2-1. The final game was just as hard fought but Graham had put too much work into Ian and took the game and the tie 3-1. Next up were the number 5’s Vincent Daly of Silversprings and Gavin Boch of UCC filling in for the Munster team. A brilliant match from the student saw him win 3-2 in a tight contest.
Next up Geoff Wales at 2 took on Munster Select’s Brendan Lawton. Geoff was well over his opponent and waltzed through the first 2 games. A few lucky bounces and a drop in concentration let the Munster player back in to claim the 3rd but it was only a stay of execution and Geoff clinched the 4th comfortably to win 3-1. Next up at 4 were Farook Khan against James McSweeney. The visiting player, Farook, couldn’t settle on the courts and James took the match easily making short work of the Munster player.
Finally, Maciej Truchan stepped up to the Munster Select number 1 role against Tommy Horgan. Nothing seemed to phase Tommy who played simple effective squash to give Maciej no chance of an upset. A 3-0 win that was less convincing than the final score line suggested but still comfortable for Tommy.
A good win for the Silversprings team sees them move up the table ahead of their match against Sundays Well this week and Munster Select must lick their wounds for another week having a bye.
